A negative mindset will drag you down. You’ll find yourself labeling, jumping to conclusions, blaming, and catastrophizing the people and situations in your life. It’s not a good place to be.
Yet, so many of us get there. We find ourselves going down the rabbit hole of negativity. We’ve got to break free from those negative thoughts that keep us from building authentic relationships, growing ourselves, and finding peace.

What if there was a way to eliminate the negative mindsets plaguing you? What if you could turn the negativity into positivity?
I want to share with you four ways you can get rid of a negative mindset and become a positive leader.
4 Ways To Get Rid Of A Negative Mindset
Consume the right fuel:
I shared about the time I put old fuel into my snowblower. The old gasoline made the snowblower chug, clunk, and eventually stop working until I gave it the right fuel.
Know what else needs the right fuel? Our minds and bodies.
We have to fuel ourselves with the right things. What are those right things?
- Positive and uplifting content and interactions
- Music that soothes your soul or energizes you
- Watching the right movies or television shows with the right mindset
- Listening to church sermons, comedy shows, or positive interviews
When we fuel ourselves with the right content, we supercharge ourselves. We find our mindsets shifting from a negative one to a positive mindset.
Surround yourself with the right friends:
The people you surround yourself with will have a major impact on your mindset. If you surround yourself with people who complain 24/7, guess what will happen? You’re going to find yourself looking for the negative aspects of your life.
On the flip side, hang around with people who are positive, uplifting, and caring… What happens then? You become more like them. You take on their traits.
Your negative mindset goes from I can’t do this, people suck, or what does it matter to I’ve got this, I love the people in my life, and my work matters.
Find friends who will encourage and uplift you.
Remind yourself of past victories:
Because we have our eyes set on what’s ahead of us, we can forget what we’ve done in the past. Maybe you turned around a failing organization, saved your marriage, or helped a child learn to ride a bike.
Those are all things to be proud of! To remember!
Our past victories aren’t an indication of who we are. But our past victories can remind us of what we’ve done and what we can do. We can look back and see that we’ve accomplished hard things.
One of the most amazing things I’ve seen recently was a former youth student of ours who recently completed her first full marathon. She struggled through parts of the marathon, but she finished. Now, she knows she can do tough things. She knows she can do more than she ever thought when she reminds herself of her full marathon.
Your past vicotires will remind you of the same. They will get you out of your mental funk and tell you that you have something to look forward to.
Look forward:
Speaking of things to look forward to, you have to have a mindset that looks forward as well. When you look forward, you’re able to plan out what’s to come. You can see where you’re going, who you’re going with, and what you can accomplish.
Don’t stop looking forward because of a bad day, week, or month. Those are blips in time that you will soon forget.
Look forward. Dream big. Have plans. Move toward the future.
