The 1994 movie Street Fighter is one of those movies you either love or absolutely hate. The movie is loosely based on the video game Street Fighter 2, which may be one of the greatest fighting games ever released. Not only is Street Fighter 2 considered one of the best fighting games, but it is also regarded as a highly influential video game.
I remember playing Street Fighter 2 in the arcades and on the SNES. My brother and I spent countless hours playing our games and fighting one another. Street Fighter 2 was impressive.
The movie may leave a different taste. I remember hating the movie when it released. The characters’ backstories were drastically altered, and the villains became heroes in the film. But one of the great things about the film is that many of the Street Fighter characters are portrayed in it. You get to see real-life versions of:

Rewatching Street Fighter for Reel Leadership, I’m left with a different opinion. I think the movie was misunderstood. While the movie drew inspiration from the video game, it wasn’t meant to be a direct adaptation of it. Plus, Street Fighter was the last film Raul Julia starred in before his untimely death due to a stroke.
Now, we have a new Street Fighter movie releasing sometime in 2026. Casting for the new film has already commenced and it’s looking good. But, before we get to that film, let’s take a look at the original 1994 Street Fighter movie!
If you’re willing to kick back, enjoy the cheese factor, and enjoy an action film that was meant to be cheesy, you’ll have a blast with Street Fighter. You may even walk away with some new leadership ideas.
Quotes And Leadership Lessons From Street Fighter
1. Power-hungry leaders cause chaos:
Chun-Li is undercover as a news reporter in Shadaloo. Her, E. Honda, and Balrog are trying to track down the evil M. Bison.
During a news segment, Chun-Li mentions that M. Bison is a power-hungry dictator. He causes chaos and pain wherever he goes.
Know what that sounds like? A bad leader.
When leaders become power-hungry, they stray from the reservation. They begin to cause chaos and havoc wherever they go.
Watch the wake you leave in your leadership journey. If there’s chaos, there’s a good chance you may be power-hungry.
2. Sagat:
Interesting, you aren’t all talk after all.
Ken and Ryu had tried to outwit Sagat by peddling fake guns in a weapons deal. They had provided toy guns instead of the real thing.
As Sagat found out, Ken and Ryu had to fight their way out. They used their skills to attack Sagat’s men. They were fierce fighters. Sagat recognized this.
There are leaders who are all talk. They are what I would call blowhards.
They speak a lot, but there’s not a lot of action behind their words. Your people and organizations will find out eventually.
Don’t be a leader who’s all talk. Put action behind your words.
3. People need to speak against bad leadership:
M. Bison had Dhalsim experiment on Blanka. Blanka would turn into a super-human soldier he could control.
As Dhalsim is reluctantly experimenting on Blanka, M. Bison sees that Blanka is in pain, he’s fighting the programming he’s being fed.
M. Bison wonders why Blanka is in so much pain. Dhalsim responds that Blanka is not psychotic like M. Bison is.
What do you do when you see bad leadership? Do you follow the leader? Do you stay silent? Are you willing to speak up and out about the things you’re seeing?
While Dhalsim did what M. Bison commanded, he did it because he was forced to. What he wasn’t forced to do was stay silent. He spoke up.
Just like you should do.
If you see bad leadership, speak up. It may cost you your job, but you will still have your dignity. Plus, those bad leaders need someone to speak the truth to them. If not you, who?
4. New leaders can quickly sway the hearts of those they lead:
Ryu was put into a cage with Vega. The two would square off in a cage match to a roaring crowd.
Vega, with his claws and good looks, had been a fan favorite. Fans carried signs showing their love and adoration for him. He had fought many battles and thought he carried the hearts of his fans.
However, that changed when he faced off against Ryu. Ryu’s cool demeanor, good looks, and skills won the hearts of the crowd. You saw signs tossed aside and women swooning over the new heartthrob.
Their love for Vega quickly changed to Ryu.
Leading others can be a challenge. When a new shiny object comes into their view in the form of a new, cool leader, they can easily change their allegiance from you to them.
Don’t be disheartened by this. It’s not you. It’s them.
Continue to lead well. Lead through the allegiance change. Be the leader they need you to be, not the one they want.
5. Bad leaders see their work as good:
M. Bison wondered why so many people saw him as a warlord. All he wanted to do was good.
His idea of good was to create genetic super soldiers that would be able to defeat the world. He would create them, send them out, and rule the world.
That doesn’t sound like good to me. Does it to you?
Bad leaders have a warped sense of good and evil. They see what they’re doing as good. They can’t see how their actions go against standards, ethics, and more.
Be cautious as you lead. Check your actions and motives. Ensure that your desires don’t distort your ideals.
6. Find creative ways to advertise your brand:
Street Fighter, the video game, was developed by Capcom. They’ve created multiple video games over the years that have touched the minds and hearts of players.
Because of their part in the video game, Capcom found creative ways to be integrated into the movie.
In one scene, Chun-Li, E. Honda, and Balrog infiltrate M. Bison’s fortress in Shadoloo. They pretend to be part of the Benbelli Bros Circus act. Chun-Li was a contortionist who entered a barrel. E. Honda and Barlog close the barrel with a lid that reads ‘Capcom’.
In another scene, M. Bison has a flying platform that contains the joystick from the Street Fighter arcade game. It was a nice nod to the game and a great way to advertise it.
What are you doing to advertise yourself or your organization? What are you doing to make yourself more known?
You have to find unique and creative ways to bring attention to yourself, what you’re doing, and the organization. Don’t be afraid to find ways to sneak in mentions of what you’re doing.
7. Sagat:
I must have been insane to think I could have done business with you.
Sagat had done the dirty work for M. Bison. When Sagat requested payment, M. Bison had a great idea. He would offer Sagat a piece of Shadoloo when he took over the country.
Sagat rejected this offer. He wanted cold, hard cash.
M. Bison then presented him with a container full of cash. Except it wasn’t US dollars. It was Bison dollars. Completely worthless.
M. Bison’s offer of Bison dollars infuriated Sagat. He began to wonder how he could have done business with M. Bison.
We’ll get into situations where we make deals with people we shouldn’t. They may be crooked, disturbed, or unethical.
Sometimes, we don’t find out before we do business with them. Other times, we know beforehand but do it anyway because we see the dollar signs.
We need to be wise and cautious when entering into business partnerships. Do your best to avoid business relationships with dishonest people.
8. Guile:
Troopers! I have just received new orders. Our superiors say the war is cancelled, and we can all go home. Bison is getting paid off for his crimes, and our friends will have died here… will have died for nothing. But… we can all go home. Meanwhile, ideas like peace, freedom and justice – they get packed up. But… we can all go home. Well… I’m not going home. I’m gonna get on my boat, and I’m going up-river, and I’m going to kick that son-of-a-***** Bison’s *** so HARD… that the next Bison wanna-be is gonna feel it. Now who wants to go home… and who wants to go with ME!
Guile’s original orders were to attack and defeat M. Bison. Those orders changed when an A.N. (Allied Nations) Official (Simon Callow) showed up. He had a new order for Guile and his team.
The team was to stand down. They were no longer to attack M. Bison. Instead, the A.N. was going to pay the $20 billion ransom M. Bison had requested.
You can only imagine what this did to Guile. He was furious. How dare they consider meeting a terrorist’s demands? How dare they send their people home? How dare they mock the ideals they held?
Leaders follow orders… to a point. When the orders don’t make sense, go against good morals, or make them do something they can’t, they stand up to the orders.
Sometimes, they even give new orders.
Don’t follow the commands given unquestioningly. Observe them, ponder them, and then make a decision on whether to follow.
You don’t have to do what you’re told.
9. Don’t celebrate victory too early:
Guile fights M. Bison. He’s victorious. Or so he thinks.
After the battle, he radios Cammy. He tells her M. Bison is dead.
Except he wasn’t.
M. Bison’s suit had a life support system that kicked in. The life support began to administer life-saving measures. Eventually, M. Bison was revived and Guile’s victory was short-lived.
We love to celebrate our wins. As we should.
However, we have to be cautious not to celebrate too early. We have to make sure we really accomplished what we set out to do.
If we celebrate too early, we can miss a vital part of the mission. Complete the mission fully, then celebrate.
10. Ken:
If I hadn’t met you, I might have become you.
Ken and Ryu were hustlers in Street Fighter. They looked out for themselves and chose to do the things that benefited them most.
As the movie progressed, their attitudes changed. They grew, learned to look out for others, and became better people.
Ken and Ryu split up because Ken wanted to look out for himself. Ryu wanted to help others. They went their separate ways.
That was until Ken sees Ryu in trouble on one of the video screens. He chose to go back and help his friend.
There, he defeated Sagat. He tells Sagat he’s glad he met him. Why? Because if he hadn’t met Sagat, he was on a path to become him.
While we long to avoid being in the presence of bad leaders, we can learn and grow from them. Ken became a better person because he saw what he didn’t want to become.
You can have the same experience. Bad leaders may hurt us, chide us, and move us in the wrong direction. However, we can also realize they’re bad leaders and choose not to follow their lead.
When you recognize you’ve been in the presence of a bad leader, turn from their ways. Go the opposite direction. Don’t become them!
11. Bad leaders repeat their mistakes:
In a hidden scene at the end of the credits, we see that M. Bison isn’t defeated. He’s revived once again.
As his fist shoots up from the rubble, there’s a computer system asking him what his menu choice is for today. What does he choose? The same thing he’d been after before: world domination.
He hadn’t learned from his experience. He wanted to give it another go.
Be cautious of repeating the mistakes you’ve made in the past. We have to learn, grow, and change when we realize that we’ve done something wrong.
We can’t continue to repeat the same actions and make the same mistakes and think things will change. Be willing to move on from your mistakes and choose something new.
